Florida, once a pivotal battleground state, has turned deep red.

That shift was reinforced Tuesday night when Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump won Florida for the third consecutive year, taking the state’s 30 delegate votes. Incumbent Republican Senator Rick Scott crushed his Democratic opponent.

The Associated Press called both races at 8:01 p.m., just after polls closed statewide.

When it comes to local, state and congressional races, voters saw multiple reelections on the ballot. WLRN reporters were assigned to watch parties in South Florida. Below we have compiled a summary of the key results of the 2024 general elections.

Senate races

Sen. Rick Scott will return to the US Senate after easy victory over Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell

Incumbent Republican Sen. Rick Scott will return to his U.S. Senate seat after clinching victory over Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell on Tuesday night in an election that will help secure his party’s control of the Senate.

The Associated Press called the race for Scott at 8:01 p.m., just after polls closed statewide.

Scott, one of the richest members of Congress, has poured millions of dollars of his own money into the race, as he has in his previous three elections.

Murcarsel-Powell had a hard time attracting attention. Until the final few weeks of the race, he garnered little financial support from national Democrats and had little recognition outside South Florida.

Key voters elect Sherri Hodies as Supervisor of Elections

One of the most competitive Florida Keys races ended with voters choosing Tuesday Republican Sherri Hoodes Longtime Supervisor of Elections Joyce Griffin was replaced by Democrat Ron Saunders.

Griffin, a Democrat, decided to resign after nearly four decades in the election office as Florida lawmakers began making changes to election laws. Florida has added several new rules regarding mail-in and early voting since 2021. These included new identification requirements, changes to how many ballots a person can submit to someone else’s name, and limiting access to drop boxes after hours.

He will now lead the Hodies district office. He gave an emotional acceptance speech Tuesday night, broadcast via Keys Talk Radio and Monroe County TV.

“I told and promised all of you that honesty and transparency is my goal, and I will never let you down,” Hodies said. “I promise to fulfill my promise to all of you, to the people of the Florida Keys.”

Hodies is one of two top GOP leaders under investigation for election fraud and illegal distribution of funds during the primary.

Cordero-Stutz wins Miami-Dade’s first sheriff’s race in more than 60 years decisively

For the first time in sixty years, Miami-Dade County has a new sheriff: Rosie Cordero-Stutz.

Republican Cordero-Stutz defeated Democrat James Reyes by a convincing margin of 55 percent to 44 percent on Tuesday night, according to the latest results. He will begin work on January 7, 2025, with responsibility for policing all of Miami-Dade County.

His election marks the first time Miami-Dade has had an elected sheriff since the early 1960s. For the past six decades, the county’s chief of law enforcement has served as an appointed police chief. But a state ballot initiative in 2018 now requires all Florida counties to elect sheriffs as well as some other government positions.

As sheriff, Cordero-Stutz will also be a law enforcement boss who is far more powerful and autonomous than the police chiefs under the supervision of Miami-Dade’s county commissioners.

Cordero-Stutz told supporters at her campaign victory party at the EB Hotel in Miami Springs.

“The message to all citizens of Miami-Dade is clear: Miami-Dade stands strong when it comes to the importance of law and order…make no mistake. My commitment is solely to the city and the protection of its residents in Miami-Dade County.”

Office of the U.S. Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick

U.S. House of Representatives 20th District: Democrat Sheila Cherfilus McCormick re-elected

Democratic Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick was re-elected Tuesday to her U.S. House seat representing Florida.

He ran uncontested in the 20th District, which includes Fort Lauderdale and western Broward County in southeast Florida. It is among the most Democratic areas of the state, as Democrats outnumber Republicans by almost 5 to 1.

Cherfilus-McCormick first won the seat in a January 2022 special election following the death of longtime Rep. Alcee Hastings. He went on to win the general elections that same year.

She is the first Black woman to represent the district.

US House of Representatives 21st District: Republican Brian Mast re-elected

Republican Rep. Brian Mast was re-elected Tuesday to his U.S. House seat representing Florida.

District 21 stretches along the state’s eastern Treasure Coast and includes St. Contains Port Lucie and Jupiter.

Since Mast was first elected in 2016, the district has become increasingly Republican, especially in presidential elections. Before that, he served in the US Army. While in Afghanistan, Mast was injured and both of his legs were amputated.

After joining the congress, he became the first member of parliament to open a satellite office in a country. Department of Veterans Affairs facility.

The Associated Press declared Mast the winner at 7:40 pm EST.

US House of Representatives 22nd District: Democrat Lois Frankel re-elected

Democratic Rep. Lois Frankel was re-elected Tuesday to her U.S. House seat representing Florida.

The compact 22nd District is located along the Gulf Coast and falls entirely within Palm Beach County.

Frankel, who was first elected to Congress in 2012, served seven terms in the Florida House of Representatives. The 2020 race, which Frankel won by 20 percentage points despite his district’s strong Democratic tilt, attracted a lot of attention because he faced a far-right Republican candidate.

His opponent in 2022 and 2024, Republican Dan Franzese, was less controversial.

US House of Representatives 23rd District: Democrat Jared Moskowitz re-elected

Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz was re-elected Tuesday to his U.S. House seat representing Florida. Although most of the area is in Broward County, it also overlaps with Palm Beach County.

The first-term Democrat previously served in the state House and served as administrator of the Florida Division of Emergency Management. He retained his seat by defeating Republican Joe Kaufman.

US House of Representatives 26th District: Republican Mario Diaz-Balart re-elected

Republican Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart was re-elected Tuesday to his U.S. House seat representing Florida.

The 26th District stretches across southern Florida from Hialeah and the northwestern suburbs of Miami to just west of Naples on the Gulf Coast. The majority are of Spanish origin.

Diaz-Balart is the longest-serving member of Florida’s congressional delegation and was first elected in 2002. He is the son of Cuban refugees and a founding member of a caucus of Spanish Republicans.

He defeated Democrat Joey Atkins.

U.S. House of Representatives 27th District: Republican Maria Elvira Salazar re-elected against Baez-Geller

Republican Maria Elvira Salazar was re-elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in Florida’s 27th Congressional District, defeating Miami-Dade County School Board member Lucia Baez-Geller.

US House District 27 covers downtown Miami, Key Biscayne, Little Havana, Coral Gables, Kendall and Cutler Bay areas.

Salazar represents a Miami-Dade district that has tilted toward Republicans in recent years.

Democrat Hillary Clinton carried the district by double digits in 2016, while former President Donald Trump narrowly achieved that figure in 2020.

US House of Representatives 28th District: Republican Carlos Gimenez re-elected

Republican Rep. Carlos Gimenez was elected Tuesday to the U.S. House seat representing Florida. The 28th District was created during the 2020 redistricting cycle after Florida gained a seat following that year’s census.

It is the southernmost region of the state, encompassing the Florida Keys, the southwestern suburbs of Miami, and the Everglades. Gimenez, the former mayor of Miami-Dade County, won the previous iteration of the seat in 2020 by defeating Democratic Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell. This year he defeated Democrat and U.S. Navy veteran Phil Ehr.

Broward voters strongly approve monitor for county’s public schools

Broward voters An important referendum decision Tuesday night to subject corrupt public school districts to expanded scrutiny from the county inspector general.

The Broward County Office of Inspector General has investigative authority over elected officials and appointed officials countywide. Now, thanks to the overwhelming passage of District Referendum 2 by a margin of 68% to 32%, that watchful eye will extend to the Broward school board, the superintendent and all district employees.

The outcome from voters is likely a response to the school board scandals of the past few years.

DeSantis appointee retains seat on Miami-Dade County School Board

Tuesday night’s re-election of an incumbent Miami-Dade school board member and the election of a new school board member will allow conservatives to maintain their five-member majority in the nation’s third-largest school district.

Mary Blanco, a Miami-Dade County School Board member appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, was re-elected to her seat in District 7, which covers most of the southwestern region of the county, including Kendall and South Dade. He defeated political newcomer and technology consultant Maxene “Max” Tuchman by more than 30 percentage points, according to preliminary results.

Joseph “Joe” Geller, a former legislator in the Florida House of Representatives and North Bay Village, won his first race for the school board against former school board member Martin Karp, according to preliminary results. Both ran unsuccessfully for Congress in U.S. House District 27 to replace Lucia Baez-Geller.
