Uncalled House and Senate elections will be contested as vote counting continues

Former President Donald Trump is approaching his second term in the White House and his Republican Party has taken control of the Senate. But control of the House of Representatives and the size of the Senate majority are still up for grabs.

While votes are still being counted, here’s a look at the key races that haven’t been canceled by the NBC News Decision Desk (read more: What are the names of these races?). Control of the House of Representatives could take days or even weeks to unravel, although some battleground states are tipped relatively quickly.

Presidential battlegrounds are up for grabs

Two so-called “blue wall” states (Michigan and Wisconsin) are too close to call, but Trump has narrow leads in both midwestern states.

In the Sun Belt, Trump also holds a lead in Arizona and Nevada, but Arizona is too early to call and Nevada is too close to call.

Although Vice President Kamala Harris is leading in New Hampshire, the race is too early to call. And it’s too early to call Alaska where Trump is leading.

It remains to call the Senate

Arizona Senate: Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego is ahead of Republican Kari Lake in the vote count, but the race is too early to call. Lake is trailing Trump in the state, while Gallego is outperforming Harris. Gallego, a former Marine, touted his military service in his race against Lake, a former local TV news anchor. Lake failed to run for governor in 2022 and made false claims that the 2022 race was affected by voter fraud.

Michigan Senate: Former GOP Rep. Mike Rogers is now locked in a tight race against former Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin in a very close contest. Rogers and Slotkin are running to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow.

Montana Senate: With so many votes left to be counted in the state, it’s too early to call the race between Democratic Sen. Jon Tester and Republican Tim Sheehy clear. Trump carried Montana, and Republicans are confident they can flip this Senate seat.

Nevada Senate: Republican Sam Brown, a combat-wounded veteran, is in a tight race against Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen, who is running for a second term in the Senate. Nevada remains narrowly divided in recent elections; Republican Joe Lombardo flipped the governor’s mansion in 2022, while Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto won re-election. But while Democrats remain hopeful that the state’s abortion referendum could help increase turnout for Democratic candidates, the margin in the race remains extremely narrow.

Pennsylvania Senate: Although Trump is projected to win Pennsylvania, the Senate race there is too close to be decided yet. Democratic Sen. Bob Casey is running for a third term against Republican Dave McCormick, the former hedge fund CEO who ran unsuccessfully for the GOP Senate nomination in 2022.

Wisconsin Senate: This race between Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin and GOP businessman Eric Hovde is still too close to call. While Democrats praised Baldwin as a senator with appeal in rural parts of the state, Republicans deluged publications that painted Baldwin as a creature of Washington. Drawing attention to the sexual orientation of the first openly gay senator.
