FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (DC News Now) — Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police are investigating after a suspect and a bystander were shot by deputies during a traffic stop in Fredericksburg on Saturday.

At approximately 8:50 p.m., deputies with the Spotsylvania County Street Crimes Task Force said they attempted to arrest a wanted man during a traffic stop at a gas station in the 3000 block of Plank Road.

When they approached the suspect’s vehicle, the suspect attempted to leave and returned to a deputy’s cruiser. The suspect then pointed a gun at a deputy, who responded by throwing their weapons.

During the incident, the suspect standing in front of the gas station and a bystander were shot.

Statewide ‘burn ban’ implemented in Maryland

A male bystander was slightly injured and was treated at the hospital. He has since been released.

The teams arriving at the scene stated that the suspect’s life-threatening condition continued and he was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Police identified him as Lawrence D. Toler II, 37, of Woodford, Virginia. He is wanted out of Chesterfield on multiple felony charges.

Police found a gun inside his vehicle. Deputies reported no other injuries in the attack.

The investigation continues.
