Tax reform bills dead on arrival in National Assembly – Ndume

Senator representing Borno South Senatorial District, Ali Ndume, has said the tax reform bills sent to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu were invalid on arrival.

Ndume called on the President to listen to the National Economic Council (NEC) and the Northern Governors Forum and immediately withdraw the bills.

The MP announced this on Kanal Television’s Politics Today program on Tuesday.

According to him, the Federal Government should seek to reduce, not increase, the tax burden on Nigerians.

“If he continues like this, I can tell you he will be dead on arrival. We don’t need to review invoices. Let people live before you start asking for taxes.

“Nigerians in general do not want to talk about any taxes or pay any taxes given the (economic) situation we are in right now.

“Nigerians are ready to pay taxes, but they can only pay taxes if they can afford it. Right now people are struggling to survive. “Let people live before you start asking them for taxes,” he added.

Ndume said the Tinubu administration should reform itself and not increase taxes paid by Nigerians.

Tax reform bills sent to the National Assembly have come under harsh criticism, with 36 state governors asking the President to withdraw the bills from the legislature.

However, the President emphasized that the bills will not be withdrawn but inputs and necessary changes can be made by MPs.
