FAIRFAX, Va. – A fatal multi-vehicle crash in the westbound lanes of Interstate 495 at Route 1 killed one person and injured several others, prompting extended closures of the highway’s passing lanes, Virginia State Police reported Tuesday evening.

The crash, which involved five vehicles, was reported to state police around 5:33 p.m.

Emergency response teams found that there were many injured people in the vehicles involved in the incident. Tragically, one person was pronounced dead at the scene.

In response, crash reconstruction teams were sent to the area and officials warned the closure would be extended as investigators worked to determine the circumstances of the collision. While the through lanes of westbound I-495 are closed, local lanes remain open, allowing some traffic to continue moving through the area.

While authorities work to clear the scene and gather information about the crash, drivers are asked to seek alternative routes and exercise caution. Virginia State Police are continuing the investigation and more details will be released as they become available.
