College Football Playoff: First Standings Announced

Big Ten Conference elite programs are at the top college football In November, the landscape is at a critical juncture.

The first College Football Playoff rankings for the 2024 season were announced Tuesday night. Oregon and Ohio State as the top two teams in the initial play-off standings. Penn State also entered the top 10 at number 6.

Among the Big Ten, rising star Indiana, which has one of three undefeated records in the CFP top ten list, also ranked No. 8. The Big 12’s BYU also sits at a perfect 9th. ACC leader Miami (No. 4), independent Notre Dame (No. 10) and Group 5 leader Boise State (No. 12) round out the top 12 teams.

The top 12 teams based on the season’s final College Football Playoff rankings will be included in this year’s 12-team playoff. The top four conference champions receive a first-round bye, while the remaining spots will be filled by the fifth-highest conference champion and the remaining seven top-ranked programs. In this week’s rankings, Oregon, Georgia, Miami and BYU will get a bye in the first round.

The first round contests will take place as follows: Boise State at Ohio State, Alabama at Texas, Notre Dame at Penn State and Indiana at Tennessee.

The remaining top 25 rankings include four ACC teams: No. 13 SMU, No. 18 Pittsburgh, No. 22 Louisville and No. 24 Missouri. Also in the SEC, No. 14 Texas A&M, No. 15 LSU and No. 16 Ole Miss are stuck in the middle bracket, with No. 24 Missouri rounding out the final conference schedule. The Big 12 also includes No. 17 Iowa State, No. 19 Kansas State and No. 20 Colorado.

Army, undefeated with a score of 8-0, ranks 25th. The Black Knights will need to get past Boise State to be automatically selected as the fifth-highest-ranked conference champion. Army has yet to beat a ranked opponent. The Notre Dame game will be played at Yankee Stadium in New York on November 23.

The four matches in the first round will be played on the home campus of the higher-ranked teams on December 20-21. The four quarterfinal contests will be played from December 31 to January in the VRBO Fiesta Bowl, Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl presented by Prudential, and Allstate Sugar Bowl. 1.

The two semifinal games will be played on January 9-10 at the Capital One Orange Bowl and the Goodyear Cotton Bowl.

The CFP National Championship will be held on January 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
