Smith and Doster in Delton destroyed by fire, locals react

A car dealership that has been in business in Delton since 1922 was destroyed after a fire broke out Monday morning.

The incident happened around 7:20 a.m. at Smith and Doster, located at the corner of Grove Street and East Orchard Street, according to News Channel 3 from Barry County Central Dispatch and the Delton Fire Department.

Many residents said they were heartbroken for the Smith family, which owns the car dealership.

“I don’t know now that the Smiths are gone,” Delton resident Phyllis Daniels said. “This town is leaving now. I hope it gets better. It’s a tragedy.”

Daniels explained what he experienced when the fire broke out.

“I didn’t know what was going on, but my son called me around 8:30 and said, ‘He lives in Clare, Michigan,'” she said. β€œHe called me and said Smith and Doster’s was on fire, and it was on fire.”

Delton-Kellogg Schools was closed for the day due to the fire, school officials said.

Nearby M-43 was closed as firefighters tried to extinguish the blaze, but it reopened around 1:30 p.m. Monday afternoon.
