Pune’s air pollution level is worsening with both PM10 and PM2.5 levels being above the standard limit set by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The Air Quality Index (AQI) in the city was 180, PM10 was 146 and PM2.5 was 91 at 18:00 on Tuesday.

Post Diwali celebrations, AQI has dropped drastically and experts have stated that weather conditions have also contributed to the current air quality situation.

PMC environment officer Mangesh Dighe said: “Pune’s AQI has worsened significantly after Diwali, but it is not just the burning of crackers that has led to this situation; weather also plays a major role. Air quality in the district has been affected by weather conditions after Diwali, depending on vehicular emissions.” “The situation has worsened every year during the winter months as it affects the distribution of dust particles that mix and turn into smoke.”

Ecologist Ketaki Sathe said, “The poor air quality index cannot be entirely blamed on Diwali celebrations. If you look at the graph, you will see that air quality has decreased in recent years. Population, traffic congestion, light pollution and many more. Poor weather today is not just because of Diwali but also due to other factors.” “Current weather and climate change are interconnected and responsible for increased pollutants in the air.”
