Ireland have announced that Eimear Considine has retired from rugby at the age of 33.

Considine, who grew up playing camogie and Gaelic football in his hometown of Limerick, only started playing rugby when he moved to Dublin at the age of 23.

He was recruited into the Ireland Sevens program and turned 15 in 2017.

Ireland’s full-back and winger suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the 2022 Six Nations and welcomed son Caolan in January 2023.

Considine was once again away from rugby due to a second ACL injury, but a strong return to action with Munster saw him called up for the match against Australia in September.

He scored for the first time in more than two years as Ireland shocked the Wallaroos in Belfast and played a key role in Scott Bemand’s team stunning New Zealand in WXV1 later that month.

Considine’s final Ireland try came in their penultimate match against Canada, and he lined up in the green for the 29th and final time against the USA in October.

“I was given the opportunity to play rugby at the age of 23. At the time I had no idea of ​​the incredible journey that awaited me,” Considine said on social media.

“But now, after 10 years, I feel it is time for the journey to end.

“I would like to thank all my coaches at Bohs, Munster and Ireland for supporting me over the years. To all my teammates, I have made friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.

“To all the supporters, you have been there for better or worse and I look forward to joining you from now on.”
