CHICAGO (Wales) — A young Chicago police officer was killed in the line of duty and two people were taken into custody in the East Chatham neighborhood Monday night.

Police said the 26-year-old officer had been on the job for three years and died after a gunman shot him multiple times.

It was a somber parade for the 6th Precinct officer early Tuesday morning. There is a line of police vehicles escorting the body to the forensic medicine office.

The shooting occurred around 8 p.m. in the East Chatham neighborhood near East 80th Street and South Ingleside Avenue.

CPD Department Larry Snelling said officers stopped the vehicle with three people inside and approached. Just then, someone inside opened fire and shot the 26-year-old police officer multiple times. Another person in the vehicle was also shot and killed.

At one point, an officer fired his gun at the scene, Snelling said. Detectives are still analyzing firearms belonging to the officers involved in the incident Monday night, he added.

Snelling said the attacker tried to flee the scene on foot, but was later detained. The third person sitting in the back seat of the vehicle was detained at the scene.

“We know at this time that an officer fired his weapon at the scene. Those officers’ weapons are still being checked at this time,” said Investigator Larry Snelling. “There is evidence to be recovered. That’s all the information we have right now.”

Authorities said the suspected attacker tried to escape. He walked away from the scene and hit one of the other officers in the process. The suspect then fled but was caught a few blocks away.

Inspector Snelling said one of the suspects was under electronic monitoring but may have cut off his ankle monitor. The news led John Catanzara, president of the Fraternal Order of Police, to call for more accountability in crime-fighting efforts.

“Does my face look surprised? Catanzara said. “Unfortunately, it doesn’t. In this county, in this city, it’s just the status quo. Again, they are allowed to do whatever they want and you keep making excuses.

The third person in the vehicle was detained. It was learned that the other injured officer was in good health.

Police said an officer at the scene fired a gun. The scene is still being analyzed.

The teams seized 2 guns at the scene.

One of the guns was in the hand of the person who suffered a fatal gunshot wound in the vehicle. The other weapon is a semi-automatic weapon with an extended magazine.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability, or COPA, is investigating

Snelling said CPD has not yet released the officer’s name out of concern for his family.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson also spoke at the news conference Monday night, and he and Snelling asked Chicago residents to keep the officer’s family in mind.
