Peruvian football player died after being struck by lightning during the match

LIMA – A 39-year-old Peruvian football player died when he was struck by lightning during a match on November 3, and four people were injured due to lightning.

It was learned that one of the goalkeepers injured in the incident was being treated for serious burns, while the other three players, aged 14, 16 and 24, were in hospital.

It was announced that the deceased player was Juventud Bellavista defender Hugo De La Cruz.

The local municipality said in a statement, according to CNN: “We join in solidarity and extend our sincere condolences to the family of young Hugo De La Cruz, who unfortunately died while being taken to the hospital after being struck by lightning.

“We wish our support and speedy recovery to the other 4 players injured in this tragic accident.”

According to CNN, the match was being played at the Coto Coto stadium in the town of Chilca, about 70 kilometers southeast of Peru’s capital Lima, and was recently ordered to be paused due to the storm.

In the video footage of the incident published by the local TV channel Onda Deportiva Huancavelic, the football players are seen walking on the field in the 22nd minute of the match played between local teams Juventud Bellavista and Familia Chocca.

A bright flash and a loud noise are heard, and one of the players is engulfed in smoke in what appears to be a small explosion.

At that moment, seven other players appear to fall at the same time as players farther away run off the screen. After this, some players can be seen trying to stand up.

The video then cuts to a spot on the ground where lightning appears to have struck, and includes footage of thunder being heard from early in the match.
