The Ministry of Police said eight police officers were dispatched to respond to a domestic dispute in Boboyi on Sunday night.

Spokesman Kamogelo Mogotsi said a stun grenade exploded in one of the rooms, causing confusion.

A police officer allegedly fired his gun when he thought his team was being attacked.

Mogotsi said a member of the Public Order Police was killed and an officer from the K-9 unit was also injured.

He said Minister Senzo Mchunu asked IPID to expedite the investigation into the incident.

“This investigation is vital to ensuring accountability and learning valuable lessons to prevent similar tragedies in the future. We urge all law enforcement teams to exercise extreme caution when planning and executing operations, especially those involving high-risk situations.”
