How to enroll in free concealed weapons permit classes in South Carolina?

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – The South Carolina Division of Law Enforcement says it is offering free concealed weapons permit courses statewide.

Agency says program is mandatory As part of South Carolina Constitutional Transport law. This statute requires two free, monthly CWP courses to be offered by SLED, a certified instructor, or local law enforcement in each county of the state.

SLED added that the program does not replace or replace existing courses currently taught in South Carolina. It is the same CWP program that is free only for the educational part of the course.

There are also some requirements to enroll in courses according to SLED:

• To be eligible to take the course, you must have a South Carolina driver’s license or own real estate in South Carolina.
• You must bring a gun and 25 rounds of ammunition for the shooting part of the lesson. You can agree with the instructor in advance to rent a gun to use during the course.
• You do not have to study in the district you live in.
• You must be at least 18 years old to join the course.

SLED also provided steps on how to sign up for a class:

• Visit SLED’s website at: www.sled.sc.gov/cwp_courses
• Select the district in which you want to attend the course and click on the “Find Course Date” button.
• You can submit your request to be added to a course by entering the date of one of the courses available in the course schedule.
• Seven days before the class, course details and instructor information confirming your attendance will be emailed to you.

“Students will receive at least four hours of instruction on basic firearm safety, basics, nomenclature, self-defense law, and laws regarding the safe and legal carry of a firearm in South Carolina. A 5,050-question multiple-choice test and SLED’s review of the CWP program a 25-round shooting qualification course that must be passed with a score of 70% or better at the end of the course,” the statement said.
