The Bangladesh Police Academy in Rajshahi, Sardah, yesterday dismissed 58 trainee sub-inspectors (SIs) from its 40th external cadet batch for “violating discipline”.

Along with them, 310 of the 804 private security guards who started one-year basic training on November 5 last year were dismissed on charges of violating discipline just before starting police service.

Before, 252 SI trainees from the same group were dismissed.

A senior official from the academy confirmed yesterday that discharge letters had been sent to the home addresses of 58 trainees.

While the police academy issued a demonstration notice to 49 students on October 24, the other 10 students were notified on October 21 for creating chaos by sitting randomly in training classes.

They were asked to respond within three days of receiving demonstration notices.

Announcements stated that there was a class on “Various Parts of the Law” for student SIs at Chamney Memorial Hall on the evening of October 21.

But instructors saw students shouting and sitting haphazardly. When the instructors asked the students to maintain discipline, the students did not comply and continued to shout.

In the notifications made to the other 10 people, it was stated that they did not maintain discipline on the evening of October 10. They allegedly shouted and did not pay attention to class in the gym.

The announcements stated that such “undisciplined behavior” in a classroom was against the academy’s rules and regulations.

PHQ, in consultation with the home ministry, conducted a background check on the political affiliations of 801 trainees in the batch, sources said. This check, carried out by an intelligence agency, was carried out after the ousting of the Awami League government on August 5.

Several dismissed trainee SEs, who claimed their innocence, had previously said they had not violated discipline.

“I was not involved in politics, and I was not hired on anyone’s recommendation. I was supposed to attend the death ceremony in a few days, but I was dismissed on charges I did not know about,” one of them had previously told this reporter.
