Which NFL head coach will be fired next? –NBC New York

It’s that time of year when NFL head coaches need to update their LinkedIn pages.

Whether it is a potential coach looking for a job or a former coach who has just lost his job, there are now multiple open positions in the league to apply for.

And with a few more losses for some teams, other jobs may open up soon.

Here are NFL head coaching vacancies and other positions that may be open.

New York Jets

New York Jets became the first team to make a coaching change in the 2024 season. Robert Saleh was fired just five games into the season after going 2-3 with a Jets team led by 40-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Saleh, who has one year left on his contract, went 20-36 over three seasons with the Jets. His .357 winning percentage was the worst among Jets head coaches with at least 40 games under his belt.

For Jets owner Woody Johnson, it was the first time a coach was fired during the season in his 25-year tenure.

The Jets appointed defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich as the team’s interim head coach, and they lost their next three games, falling to 2-6. Ulbrich, who played as a defender for 10 seasons, San Francisco 49ers He served as the linebackers coach of the Atlanta Falcons for six seasons, earning his first victory in Week 9, beating the Houston Texans 21-13.

The Jets are looking to end the NFL’s longest active playoff drought in 13 seasons. They will try to become the third team in league history to make the playoffs with an interim coach at the helm, joining the 2021 Raiders with Rich Bisaccia and the 1961 Oilers with Wally Lemm.

New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints looked like one of the NFL’s surprise teams with a 2-0 start to the season. Just seven weeks later their head coach Dennis Allen was fired.

The Saints let him go Monday after losing their seventh straight game to fall to 2-7; This was the team’s first seven-game losing streak since 1999.

Allen, who replaced Sean Payton in 2022, went 18-25 with the Saints. Allen was fired as head coach for the second time in midseason after being fired by the Raiders after an 0-4 start in 2014. He went 8-28 over two seasons with the Raiders.

Following the Saints’ first midseason fumble since 1985, the team named special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi as interim coach.

What about those Cowboys?

The Dallas Cowboys are 3-5, in third place in the NFC East, and have reportedly been missing Dak Prescott for several weeks due to a hamstring injury.

Head coach Mike McCarthy went 75-45 over four seasons with the Cowboys, but was just 1-3 in the playoffs, including a 48-32 home win over his former team, the Green, in last season’s wild-card round. Including the embarrassing defeat of . Mr. Packers.

McCarthy’s five-year contract expires at the end of the season, but he has received repeated public support from Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

“I have a good relationship with Mike,” Jones told reporters after Sunday’s game. According to Jon Machota of The Athletic. “I know how hard he works. I love his football IQ. I know how well he works. I think he has a phenomenal coaching record.”

“He’s really good with the players. They think very highly of him. He’s got a lot of fire in him. So I’m just giving you this, I like the positive things I see. And by the way, obviously, some of the best coaches I’ve ever been around, I’ve had the chance to see them in my bad times.” happened.”

Also on the hot seat is Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson. Coming off a season in which they lost five of their last six games and missed the playoffs, the Jaguars are currently 2-7. The team has regressed every season since Pederson’s first season as head coach in 2022; He went 9-8 that season and pulled off an epic comeback victory in the wild card round. It’s been mostly downhill since then.

The same can be said New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll. He was named the 2022 NFL Coach of the Year following his first season with the Giants, following a surprising 9-7-1 season and an upset win over the Minnesota Vikings in the wild-card round. But that seems like a long, long time ago. The Giants finished 6-11 last season and are 2-7 this season.

We’ll see what happens to these coaches and others on Black Monday…if it lasts that long.
