Vacant church in Camden, NJ burned down – NBC10 Philadelphia

Fire crews in Camden, New Jersey, were working early Monday, Nov. 4, 2024, as an abandoned church burned and part of the structure collapsed.

According to authorities, the fire started around 4:20 a.m. at the former Friendship Baptist Church in the 1000 block of South 8th Street in Camden, New Jersey.

While the first responders arriving at the scene detected the fire coming from the roof, officials said that part of the building collapsed.

This wasn’t the first fire to break out at the vacant church, according to a woman who lives near the building.

“This is the third or fourth time the church has burned,” said Brenda, who asked NBC10 not to share her last name.

He claimed that the last time the church caught fire was about two or three months ago. Brenda said she believed the building had been left vacant for at least the last five years because she lived on the block, and she was concerned people were using the building to “get high and sleep.”

Fire officials said that there was no one in the building when they intervened to extinguish the flames.

No injuries were reported in this incident.

Fire officials did not provide information about what might have caused the fire, but stated that the investigation was ongoing.
