I didn’t try to bat like Kane Williamson, I preferred to play my own game: Will Young

Will Young says he is not trying to bat like Kane Williamson in New Zealand’s recently concluded Test series against India. Young made his Test debut in December 2020 but remained out of the squad. However, the right-hander became a mainstay for the Black Caps on Indian soil after winning the Player of the Series award.

In three Tests, Young scored 244 runs at an average of 48.80 with two half-centuries and was rewarded for his efforts with a score of 71. Young was relieved to get regular opportunities after spending most of the last four years in the reserves and hauling booze.

“Since my debut about four years ago, I’ve been in and out through form (or) selection. I’ve been a reserve hitter for a few years now, so I’m starting to understand the feel of running the league. It smokes really well,” Young told reporters.

‘Williamson would be a great person to trust’

Young started playing in the XI for the India Tests after Williamson failed to recover from a groin injury. Young was honored after filling the “big boots” but also talked about sticking to his own game rather than trying to copy Williamson.

“When I get the opportunity to play, I’m more excited to go out and do my own thing my own way and not try to replace Kane or whoever, but just play my own game and see that as a great thing. “I try not to bat like Kane instead of the big boots. , I try to bat like me and I do it my way,” Young said.

“Unfortunately, Kane isn’t here, and if he were, he’d be a great person to lean on and ask what he’s thinking in certain situations. We also had three very good camps back home leading up to the series, and he was in those camps as well,” Young added.

In 19 Tests so far, Young has scored 961 runs at an average of 30.03 with nine half-centuries to his name.
