A woman with family in Waiohiki told Hawke’s Bay Today Houses 100 meters apart were hit at 4 a.m. on Sunday, even though no patched gang members lived in the houses.

“One of the houses is occupied by my 60-year-old aunt, who lives there while construction continues on her house, which was damaged in Hurricane Gabrielle.

“These gang wars are getting out of control. “Innocent people are being targeted, and it will be innocent people who will be harmed.”

A police spokesman said police presence had increased in affected communities in recent days to provide reassurance and investigate.

Hawke’s Bay response manager Senior Sergeant Caroline Martin said police believed the incidents were gang-related and were trying to establish links between them.

So far, police have arrested four people and found and seized several firearms.

Martin said recent high-visibility police practices have made a difference.

“Our officers are on patrol to provide support and reassurance to members of our community, many of whom are understandably shaken by this criminal behaviour.

“Hawke Bay police will work tirelessly to hold criminals accountable to ensure our people are safe and feel safe.”
