TROIS-RIVIÈRES — Quebec’s police oversight agency, the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI), has launched an investigation following the death of a man during a police response in Trois-Rivières on Saturday night.

Mauricie regional newspaper Le Nouvelliste, based in Trois-Rivières, reported that the police operation took place on Arthur-Vaillancourt Street in the Cap-de-la-Madeleine district of the city.

According to preliminary information from BEI, someone called 911 around 9 p.m. to report another person in crisis at the residence.

When officers from the Trois-Rivières police department arrived at the scene a few minutes later, the 911 caller was waiting for them. They decided to enter the building.

Police entering the house noticed a person holding a gun. They opened fire and injured the person.

The injured person, who was taken to the hospital, was declared dead.

BEI appointed five investigators to examine the circumstances surrounding the death. They did not seek support from another police force.

BEI is also appealing for witnesses to come forward.
