Four people were killed and 17 injured in a massive crash on Interstate 96 near Webberville, Michigan — about 70 miles west of Detroit — late Saturday night.

Police said the fatal crash occurred just before midnight when a semi-truck with a trailer approached traffic while stopped on the interstate but failed to stop in time. The truck hit several vehicles in the left lane.

Police said that the truck and some vehicles caught fire due to the impact.

Officials said about 15 vehicles, including trucks, were involved.

The highway will remain closed in both directions until the investigation is completed and the debris is cleared.

Traffic on I-96 was stopped briefly before the crash so utility crews could work on power lines, officials said. Police were about to reopen the interstate when the crash happened.
