At 07:30 local time on Sunday morning, a long queue of F1 drivers wanted to take to the track after Saturday’s qualifying session ended in complete rain.

Wet conditions, a newly resurfaced track and cold morning temperatures provided the perfect ingredients for yellow and red flags this session.

And after a few minor yellow flag incidents, the session was stopped completely midway through the first quarter as Franco Colapinto disappeared into the wall at the Senna esses exit. This red flag left teammate Alex Albon, as well as George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, in danger of elimination in the first quarter due to continued rain.

Fortunately, the repair work where Colapinto hit the wall was completed completely quickly, allowing a frantic first quarter session to continue.

Russell managed to get himself out of trouble but Hamilton was struggling to get out of the first quarter qualifying zone. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen’s lap time was deleted, leaving him hanging just above the relegation zone.

Verstappen then set the fastest time in the first quarter with his final effort, but it was a disaster for Hamilton, who was unable to get out of the first quarter in the conditions he has loved throughout his career.

“It’s the bloody car, man,” he complained after being told he would qualify 16th at the Brazilian Grand Prix.
