Desserts that make a difference

KAYLAN Duncan aims to be the best version of herself and has adopted a mature mindset to take on responsibility at a young age.
He is an entrepreneur striving for a better life and is paving the way for success with his small baking business. She owns KK’s Sweet Treats, a homemade bakery, where she bakes delicious cinnamon rolls, cheesecakes and sponge cakes with toppings.

As a city girl, she balances her personal life with her student life and includes God as a vital part of her daily routine, keeping her focused and motivated. Duncan is a first-year student at the University of Guyana (UG) and aspires to become a lawyer, inspired by his mother, who also attended UG and is a Probation Officer.

The 19-year-old said he studied online and decided to use his free time wisely by starting a small business when he wasn’t researching or doing homework. Kaylan told Pepperpot Magazine that baking is in her genes; Both her mother and grandmother are caterers, excellent cooks, and bakers who fulfill orders for food and cakes.

She grew up watching them bake, and one day she suddenly had a craving for cinnamon rolls, so she made a batch for herself. He was pleasantly surprised when they turned out better than expected and soon became a complete hit among his family members.
Duncan said he was excited and a light bulb went off in his head, leading him to start his own small baking business. She makes cinnamon rolls with toppings like strawberries, cookies and cream, double chocolate, white chocolate and cream cheese, as well as sponge cakes and cheesecakes with strawberry toppings.

In June 2023, his life changed as he took on the responsibility of starting his venture into a small business while also balancing his studies and personal life. His business was named after his childhood nickname, KK, and he decided to use it for its logo, branding and packaging. Duncan advertises the small business on social media, including Instagram and TikTok, and has three baking days a week.

According to Duncan, running a small business is not always profitable due to high food costs. He buys in bulk to offset costs while keeping his products affordable. “I’ve learned to accept that sometimes I may not make a profit, but it’s worth it because I want everyone to be able to buy my products,” he reflected.

He added that he was able to continue his business thanks to the strong family support for which he was grateful. Duncan says he gives more than he receives, but that’s okay because he was taught that giving is more sacred than receiving.
The young entrepreneur from North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, comes from a large family consisting of his parents, grandmother, uncle and three younger siblings.

Even though his hobby turned into a small business and it is not very profitable, he loves it and KK’s Sweet Treats with its motto “Love at first bite” is his first love. He is also looking for job opportunities to gain experience and knowledge.
Duncan explained that the hardest part of being a small business owner begins; Once you take action, the desire to persevere comes naturally. He added that it is better to start a business when you are young, because even though it is risky, it becomes easier when you have the self-confidence to take the first step.

“It’s not easy being a small business owner at my age, but I’m disciplined enough to manage it. “This has turned me into a more responsible person, financially and otherwise,” he said.
Duncan, who spent another two years at UG, explained that he needed a stimulating job to stay active but aimed to open his own quaint little bakery one day. Duncan believes his cinnamon rolls are more than just a classic because he’s introduced his own unique homemade sauces.
