Perodua, Malaysia’s largest automobile manufacturer, came to Bangladesh earlier this year, partnered with PHP Automobiles and launched five models. Each model is based on various Toyota and Daihatsu platforms, making them familiar faces under a different badge.

Among these, the Axia stands out as Perodua’s most wallet-friendly offering; It’s an entry-level ride that aims to be the choice of Bangladeshi drivers, just like the reliable Toyota Corolla of yesteryear.

The second generation Axia was built on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture, derived from the Toyota platform and renamed Toyota Wigo in certain markets. The car’s simple exterior design combines a flat nose with LED headlights and position lamps and parking sensors placed underneath.

Small 14-inch wheels save fuel, but 15-inch wheels could do justice to the design.

The Axia gives no illusions of grandeur when viewed from the rear. This car is about much more than style, with its vertical crash bumper giving it a wall-mounted appearance. The manually operated rear hatch opens to a 265-litre cargo area, but the high tailgate can pose a challenge when carrying anything important.

There are some surprises inside, especially in the front row, where space is generous enough even for tall passengers, although there are nods to budget-friendly construction in the plastic panels and minimalist layout. The base head unit is screenless, but PHP Automobiles has promised to replace this with an aftermarket infotainment system that includes a rearview camera to complement the parking sensors.

Other key features include digital climate control, a 12-volt outlet, cup holders, and an overhead seatbelt warning light that some might find a bit over-the-top. But rear seat comfort isn’t a strong point; limited thigh support and headroom make it less than ideal for taller passengers. But again, Perodua has thoughtfully included several rear luggage hooks for up to 5kg each; this was useful for odd purchases.

Under the hood, the Axia’s 1,000cc Toyota 1KR-VE engine, borrowed from the Japanese Domestic Model (JDM) Toyota Vitz, is designed to be frugal and reliable.
