Sacred Ground BBQ restaurant opening soon

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Texas-made barbecue is coming soon to the Pocahontas community.

Derek Emerson, chef and owner of Walker’s Drive-In, Caet Seafood and Local 463, is opening this new restaurant.

Sacred Ground Barbecue will offer fine dining on par with Emerson’s other restaurants, but with a more casual atmosphere.

“We want to do something that’s a little more casual, a little more fun and kind of, you know, kind of hanging out,” Emerson said.

Emerson says they will serve Texas-influenced barbecue with a love of Mississippi.

Some of the food will include pulled pork and ribs, prime brisket, prime jerky, and turkey.

“But in Texas, offset smokers cook entirely with wood and really premium meat,” Emerson said.

There will also be side options including tomato and cucumber salad, corn salad, pinto beans and more.

At one time the venue was The Big Teepee Barbecue restaurant and then T’Beau’s Crawfish, but Emerson hopes to breathe some life back into the area.

Emerson said the name Sacred Ground Barbeque was inspired by the Indian mounds at Pocahontas. They wanted to incorporate some of the history into the restaurant.

Sacred Ground Barbecue is scheduled to open in mid-November.
