Woman who fell on hot pavement was reunited with the driver who helped her

SCOTTSDALE, AZ — In October, a Lyft passenger reached out to ABC15 in hopes of finding the driver who helped him after he fell on hot pavement in Scottsdale.

We found that driver.

When ABC15 first met Scottsdale’s Karen Fischer, she showed pictures of what happens when liquid spills onto a bumpy, bitterly hot sidewalk in Old Town Scottsdale on a sweltering August day.

“I never thought about dying until I got there and thought, ‘This could be the end,'” Fischer said in October.

Fischer had third-degree burns that kept him in the hospital for more than 20 days, and he needed a skin chart as part of his recovery.

The 69-year-old didn’t even want to think about how bad those injuries would have been had it not been for a stranger in the form of the rideshare driver he knew only as Sandra.

Fischer said the driver picked him up from the hot pavement, took him to his house, helped Fischer get inside safely, and came back to check on him later the same day.

After the initial story aired, Sandra reached out to ABC15 to say she, too, wanted to give Fischer a long-overdue hug.

Fischer hugged Sandra Rodriguez, who is originally from California, and said, “You are so beautiful, thank you my angel.”

Rodriguez said he was a truck driver until he gave birth to his first child, before going to Lyft.

He says Lyft has helped him earn some money to support his growing family.

“I would probably do it again if I saw you or anyone who needed help,” Rodriguez said.

On Friday, numbers were shared about brunch plans on the horizon, and the two fawned over photos of Rodriguez’s baby Mason.

Since November 1st was Sandra’s 39th birthday, Fischer even gave Rodriguez a thank you card filled with gift cards and some birthday money.

Fischer reached out to ABC15 hoping for a hug from a helpful stranger, and in doing so, he got a lot of things, including a new role for Mason on ‘AZ Grams.’
