WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) – A Wausau couple has filed a complaint with the Wisconsin Elections Commission about what they say are five problems with the city’s current ballot drop boxes.

Wausau added A ballot box in 2022 for absentee voters

The couple is asking the WEC to review the opening size of the box as items larger than the envelope can be placed inside. And to check if it is safe. They also say the box should be reserved for absentee ballots only.

Currently, Wausau city residents can use this box for payments and other city requests. Complainants say the box should be marked for absentee ballots. They also say that the box should indicate when the contents will last be removed and that it is secured so that nothing else can be placed inside once the box is removed.

They say the ballot was not in a well-lit area, which is a violation.

On October 23, WEC acknowledged receipt of the complaint and notified City Clerk Kaitlyn Bernarde, Deputy Clerk Kody Hart, and Wausau Finance Director Maryanne Groat. Respondents have until November 11 to respond. The couple is then allowed to provide their own response.

Once all permitted applications are received, Commission staff will review the information and draft a decision letter for the Commission to consider and decide at the next meeting.
