King County deputies describe brave rescue of man from burning car

Two King County Sheriff’s Office deputies talk about their situation Saving a man from a burning car is a harrowing experience.

The incident occurred at Newcastle Golf Club Road and 136th Avenue SE; where deputies and community members quickly moved to rescue Jacob Shook, who was trapped inside the vehicle.

Deputy Joshua Charles, who trained Deputy Cameron Gomez at the time, explained the urgency of the situation.

“My heart skipped a beat when I saw his vehicle,” Charles said. “It was a terrible situation. I don’t know how else to explain it. It’s not something you can really mentally prepare for; it’s something you just have to go in and handle and try to help this person.”

Gomez echoed this sentiment and emphasized that they were focused on getting Shook to safety.

“We knew someone was trapped in the car and that was our focus,” Gomez said.

Deputies noted there were numerous community members who stopped to help, some providing fire extinguishers. “The fire extinguishers were already there,” Charles said. “I think I heard someone later stop the cars and ask if they had a fire extinguisher in their vehicle.”

Authorities now emphasize the importance of having a fire extinguisher in your car and knowing how to use it. Charles noted that the fire extinguishers made a big difference and expressed relief that Shook was recovering.

“We got messages from my sister, so I’m really glad she reached out to us and let us know she’s okay,” Gomez said. “For those five or six days I didn’t know if he was alive or not.”

Jacob Shook remains at Harborview Medical Center as he continues to recover.
