What is the Story?

Set in the Middle Ages, MAX & THE MIDKNIGHTS features 10-year-old Max (voiced by Blu del Barrio), a sidekick bard who dreams of the adventurous life of a knight. He gets his wish when he visits his Uncle Budrick’s (Jeremy Rowley) hometown, the kingdom of Byjovia. Uncle Budrick is immediately kidnapped by Byjovia’s cruel autocratic ruler, King Gastley (Brian Stepanek), and forced to become his jester. Max is determined to save his uncle and help the Byjovian villagers living in poverty under King Gastley’s rule. Village children Kevyn, Millie and Simon join Max and become “knights of midnight”. Will they succeed in their epic quest to save Byjovia from King Gastley and give the villagers the peaceful life they deserve?

This adaptation is a new animated series that is a successful combination of dynamic characters, positive messages, funny jokes and high-octane music. Adults and kids alike will love seeing Max defy gender expectations and jump fearlessly into battle. Max and the Midnights. Medieval humor is spot on: Think Monty Python-esque “meat wound” jokes with nuggets thrown in for adults, too. Its unique animation style and design, with CG animation that mimics vintage claymation, brings the original book’s illustrations to life. The metal and punk-infused songs are truly stunning, and their genius is sometimes highlighted by silly Broadway-style dance numbers. Most importantly, there are so many life lessons intertwined with all this nonsense and fire-breathing dragons. Maximum full of heart and a great watch for the whole family.

Talk to Your Children About This…

  • Families can talk about the bravery of Max and his friends. They often get themselves into dangerous situations because they fight for what is right. Can you think of a time in your real life when you showed courage?

  • Max was told he couldn’t be a knight because he was a girl, but he insisted because that’s what he really wanted to do. Have you ever been told that you “can’t” do something because of your personal identities? How did this make you feel? How did you react or wish you had reacted?

  • Max has tremendous determination. No matter what obstacle comes his way, he continues on his way until he reaches his goal. What do you think drives him to persevere?
