The Vancouver Canucks’ 6-0 defeat against the New Jersey Devils was something we haven’t seen since 2006. This level of explosiveness on home soil is something you can’t just ignore. It’s important to let this go and focus on the next play, but Rick Tocchet and the players need to watch the tape and go back to the drawing board.

“Obviously everything went wrong from the beginning,” Tocchet said of the loss. “Some players were struggling and it continues like that. There will be games like this in an 82-game calendar. We need to flush the toilet.

“(We) must give them credit. They shot very well. We started to unravel a little bit, we got frustrated and, you know, everyone started cheating a little bit and that’s what happens. You must stick together. Like I said, you have to let this thing go, learn from it and move on.”

For the Canucks, the power play has been the focus of practice all week. There were rumors that they would change units, but in the end, everyone who moved the puck onto the ice changed. The guys have trouble shooting the puck on the power play, only taking three shots on goal in four power play opportunities but allowing two. Tocchet addressed this issue after the match.

“We don’t shoot when we should and we shoot when we (don’t); We are so stuck in between. We slow down the flow of power. It’s a frustrating situation for us right now. It’s a mental state for us right now. “We will have to continue to work (playing) more mentally than physically.”

The club is taking the day off today but returns to practice on Friday and heads out for a three-game road trip, starting in San Jose. Here’s Tocchet’s assessment of his players and what he’s seen tonight and so far this season.

“If you think you’re playing well, I don’t think anyone there – I hope not – thinks we’re playing well. But there are some things we like about our game. But obviously we haven’t put in a (full) 60 (minute) game yet. We need to loosen up a bit and take the lead to make sure we’re ready to play; This is my responsibility. I’ve got to get these guys ready to play.

“You’ve got to look at your game. What am I doing wrong? Some people are doing the right things, don’t get me wrong. I think some guys are just trying to go from A to Z without moving forward. Your first job on forecheck is to run through a guy, not necessarily kill him. Our weird guy news is probably here “It was the worst news I’ve seen since I arrived. It reminded me of when I took over the team. We were not in a good mood tonight.”

This was Arturs Silovs’ first start since opening night, when he scored six goals in an overtime loss to the Calgary Flames. The 23-year-old put in a tough performance but Tocchet wasn’t putting the blame solely on him after waiting so long between starts.

“You want to play a solid game. We’re giving up two to one starting in the first 10 seconds. That’s probably not the best thing to give to a guy who hasn’t played in two weeks.”

Tyler Myers also commented on Silovs.

“It wasn’t Arty’s fault. Tonight we hung Arty outside to dry. He doesn’t need to worry about that.”

Here’s what Myers had to say about the game as a whole:

“It was embarrassing. We should be ashamed. Despite some wins in the last few weeks, we still have some things to clean up within our game at the moment. We must find our identity. We’re not there yet right now, and we know it. “As difficult as it was tonight, we have to keep working and be ready to come out and fight back in the next game.”

For the Devils’ first goal just 1 minute into the game, Myers pinch-hit Nico Hischier and Dawson Mercer in a two-on-one matchup.

“The first time, (I) would have loved to give it up. It seemed we were playing two against one and three against two all night long; We need to clean them up.”

It is important not to dwell on the defeat too much and to work hard in training and look forward to the next match.

“This is a wake-up call for us,” Myers said. “On nights like these, it’s much easier to look now. Whether we lose 6-0 or 1-0, we must continue to work on our team play and get to the level we need to be consistent in this league. It starts with practice. It was talked about after the match.

“We need to be aware of what we are doing and what we are not doing within our system. And then it comes down to work. We have to get back to work. “We’re not working hard right now.”

To put the team up 3-0, Canucks’ 5’10” forward Conor Garland tried to get the team going while tackling Erik Haula. Vice-captain JT Miller noted Garland’s tough effort.

“It was such a great fight. You thought maybe we could play a little better from now on. This sucks. The guy gets punched in the head because of you.”

“We make it too easy for the other team. There isn’t enough F you in our game.”
