Solid-state batteries enter pilot production, costs expected to drop dramatically – pv magazine USA

Latest findings from Taipei-based intelligence provider TrendForce show that all solid-state battery production volumes could reach GWh levels by 2027. Rapid expansion will lead to declines in cell prices, reaching 0.6-0.7 CNY/Wh ($0.084-0.098). By 2035.

From ESS News of pv magazine

The push to commercialize solid-state batteries (SSBs) is betting on the technology in many industries, from automotive to storage. However, with excitement around full-solid-state batteries having cooled somewhat and the technology taking longer to become widespread than expected, semi-solid-state batteries, which use a hybrid design of solid and liquid electrolyte, are making steady progress towards commercialization. .

TrendForce’s latest findings reveal that major manufacturers around the world, such as Toyota, Nissan and Samsung SDI, have already begun pilot production of all-solid-state batteries. It is estimated that production volumes could reach GWh levels by 2027 as these companies enter the race to increase production.

The decades-old technology promises improvements in safety and energy density, but has so far struggled to achieve commercial success. High production costs, complex production processes and the lack of a mature supply chain have hindered distribution.

Meanwhile, semi-solid-state batteries have already been largely commercialized and are currently used in electric vehicles. According to TrendForce, they have already achieved scaled installation at the GWh level, with cell energy densities ranging from 300-360 Wh/kg.

The starting price of semi-solid state cells exceeds 1 CNY/Wh ($0.14/Wh) due to their small production scale and the immaturity of their production technology. TrendForce predicts that with increasing production scale and technological advances, the comprehensive cost of semi-solid-state batteries could fall below 0.4 CNY/Wh by 2035.

All-solid-state batteries are moving from prototype sample cells to engineering-scale production and are also expected to face high early-stage production costs, which could increase initial product prices. TrendForce predicts that if the scale of all solid-state battery applications exceeds 10 GWh by 2030, cell prices will likely drop to around 1 CNY/Wh. By 2035, cell prices may drop to 0.6-0.7 CNY/Wh with rapid and large-scale market expansion.

Focus on sulfite based SSB technology

Today, there are three competing ways to make solid-state batteries based on different types of electrolytes, each with its own set. technological bottlenecks. Polymer-based solid-state batteries are relatively mature and have already been commercialized in some parts of Europe…
