Hyderabad news: Hyderabad police on Wednesday arrested six people in connection with the death of a woman and the hospitalization of more than 20 people due to suspected food poisoning after consuming momos from different outlets of a restaurant chain. The arrests were made following complaints from the victims’ families.

Based on the complaint, Telangana police registered two cases on charges of murder and culpable homicide not falling within sections of the BNS Act, PTI reported.

According to NDTV, the incident, which sent shockwaves across the city, started when Reshma Begum, a 31-year-old single mother, and her daughters, aged 12 and 14, ate momos from a street vendor in Hayratabad on October 25. . Soon the family experienced serious symptoms such as diarrhea, stomach pain and vomiting. While Reshma succumbed to her illness on October 27, her daughters were under medical care.

Police said around 20 people were also hospitalized after eating momos sold by the same group of vendors at different locations. Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials, with police support, tracked down the vendors and discovered that the food outlets were being operated without proper licences. Food safety officials then sent the momo samples to the government laboratory for analysis.

GHMC has also ordered immediate halt to the operations of vendors, stressing on strict action against unlicensed and unhygienic food establishments.

Meanwhile, the state’s Food Safety Commissioner has ordered an immediate ban on the production and storage of mayonnaise made from raw eggs, citing repeated incidents of food poisoning in connection with it. However, the ban does not cover mayonnaise produced with pasteurized eggs, provided it complies with safety regulations and has valid FSSAI certification.

The decision was taken during Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha’s review meeting with the Food Safety Department.
