INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A jury found a 57-year-old man guilty of illegally possessing multiple firearms after being convicted of felonies. U.S. Attorney’s Office in Indianapolis he says.

The case against Salam Abdul Ali of Indianapolis began when Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were called to a domestic disturbance at a home on Jan. 28. A woman living in the house reported that Ali owned a gun and threatened her, her children, and her brother after an argument the night before. A news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office was issued Wednesday I didn’t say give the location of the house.

IMPD returned to the home with a search warrant on February 14 and found five firearms, as well as ammunition and gun accessories, in the bedroom. No detailed information about the weapons was given in the statement. The police’s body cameras recorded the raid.

Officers learned that Ali’s former name was Christopher Butler. He changed his name after being convicted of murder in Marion County and sentenced to 60 years in prison. Online records show the lawsuit was filed in November 1986.

He was released from state prison in approximately 2013, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Ali was convicted in federal court in 2019 for his role in the drug trafficking conspiracy and sentenced to time in federal prison.

Ali, who was on federal supervised release at the time of the February raid, was prohibited from ever legally possessing a firearm again because of his felony convictions.

The statement stated that Ali would be sentenced “at a future hearing.”
