Plows in Gogebic district are preparing for the first snowfall

GOGEBIC COUNTY, Michigan (WLUC) – The Gogebic County Road Commission is preparing for the first snowfall since late September.

During the summer months, many of the plow trucks are used for transportation for maintenance projects. This means that plows must be reinstalled every fall. Currently, 18 of the 20 plows in Gogebic District are ready for winter.

Gogebic County Road Commission Director Garth Stengard said the first snowfall could be the most dangerous.

“Be careful,” Stengard said. “The first snowfall is always the most dangerous because the ground is still warm and the roads are more slippery. That’s why I think the traveling public should slow down and be careful.”

Stengard said last winter was a good winter for the road commission because plow drivers were not overworked or exposed to undue stress. But he also realizes that a lack of snow isn’t good for the local economy.

This year, the Gogebic County Road Commission is fully staffed and ready for whatever winter may bring.
