Police warn thrill seekers to stay away from Long Island’s Kings Park Psychiatric Center this Halloween

KINGS PARK, Long Island (WABC) — Long Island police are increasing patrols to protect a piece of historic property at Nissequogue River State Park and to protect potential trespassers.

Kings Park Psychiatric Center has been closed for over a decade, but every year people flock to the site in the hope of spotting some paranormal activity.

Police warn that seeking these thrills could lead to some dangerous and undesirable consequences.

Some of the abandoned buildings date back to the late 1800s, but Building 93 in particular, which has housed hundreds of patients for decades, has attracted the attention of both teenagers and police.

“This building is probably the most iconic building we have on our property, the tallest and most sought after by the public because of its intrigue,” park manager Christopher Thompson said.

New York State Parks took control of the site from the state Department of Mental Health after the center closed in 1996.

“Rumors are that doctors are doing experiments on patients in this building specifically, so I think maybe that’s the appeal… I’ve heard people think there are ghosts in there,” said Sgt. Christopher Pirozzi of the Long Island State Park Police.

Police say paranormal activity, or lack thereof, is extremely dangerous inside.

“There’s asbestos inside the buildings, there’s deterioration, floors have collapsed, there are open elevator shafts, so we’re trying to deter people from going in,” Pirozzi said. “I know so-called urban explorers love to check this out, but it’s definitely unsafe.”

The land is open to the public during the day, but anyone trespassing after sunset may be fined or arrested.

“Right now this time of year is at night, please don’t come here, we appreciate the concern but we want everyone to have a safe Halloween season,” Thompson said.

State park police will add officers and lights to the area from Wednesday through Halloween and Sunday morning.
