Liverpool advanced to the quarter-finals of their English League Cup title defense by beating Brighton 3-2 on Wednesday with Cody Gakpo’s double.

The Netherlands international scored in the 46th and 63rd minutes at the Amex Stadium, while Luis Diaz added a third in the 85th minute after Brighton pulled one back with a goal from Simon Adingra.

Liverpool continued on their way after Tarik Lamptey scored Brighton’s second goal in the 90th minute.

Liverpool have won the League Cup a record 10 times; They last beat Chelsea in the final last season.

Five more last 16 matches are played on Wednesday, including Manchester City visiting Tottenham and Manchester United hosting Leicester two days after sacking manager Erik ten Hag.
