He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Nov. 12 and is being held in custody on $5,000 bail.

According to the affidavit, at 12:50 a.m. Friday, detectives located a vehicle that had been reported stolen by Castle Rock police on Oct. 23.

Detectives spotted two men inside the stolen vehicle at the Valero Gas Station at 6140 Federal Boulevard in Denver and began establishing a perimeter when the vehicle left the gas station and headed north on Federal Boulevard toward Pecos Street.

According to the affidavit, the driver of the vehicle ran a red light on Pecos Avenue and police began pursuing the vehicle. The vehicle then headed west on US 36 from Pecos Street, traveling at 100 mph in a 65 mph zone.

Detectives lost sight of the vehicle near U.S. 36 and Church Ranch Boulevard, according to the affidavit.

At 2:09 p.m., Colorado State Patrol troopers were dispatched to respond to a two-car crash involving a stolen vehicle near the intersection of North 95th Street and Valmont Road. Allegedly, the driver of the stolen vehicle left the scene of the accident on foot.

The other driver was not injured in the crash, according to Colorado State Patrol Trooper Sherri Mendez.

While troopers investigated the scene, Boulder County Sheriff’s deputies said they detained a suspect, later identified as Escalera-Hernandez, at a nearby farm.

Escalera-Hernandez told deputies he worked for the owner of the farm and had the keys to a 1990 Dodge truck in his pocket, according to the affidavit. A short time later, the owner of the farm told deputies that he had no employees, had never seen Escalera-Hernandez before, and did not allow him to drive his truck.

In her interview with police, Escalera-Hernandez initially said her mother dropped her off at the farm for work, but her friend later took her there.

When deputies asked if he was driving the stolen truck, Escalera-Hernandez said his friend picked him up in the truck but he fell asleep and he took over the driving. He also stated that his friend bought the truck from another person, but neither of them had contact information.

At the time of his arrest, Escalera-Hernandez had six warrants for his arrest, according to testimony.

Specifically, he had two prior convictions for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle outside the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.

Responding agencies include the CATPA Metropolitan Auto Theft Task Force, Colorado State Patrol, Louisville Police Department and Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.
