Men from Roanoke and Troutville convicted for their involvement in the Jan. 6 incident

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – Two men from Roanoke and Troutville were convicted Tuesday for their involvement in the Jan. 6 Capitol breach, according to the United States Department of Justice (DOJ).

Peter Willey, 37, of Roanoke, and Ethan Mauck, 31, of Troutville, were convicted of obstructing law enforcement during a civil disorder and misdemeanor disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds. The men are scheduled to be sentenced on February 28, 2025.

According to the Department of Justice, Willey and Mauck attended the “Stop the Steal” Rally in Washington, D.C., on January 6, 2021, and can be seen in photos and videos entering restricted areas of the U.S. Capitol.

The Justice Department says the footage shows Willey and Mauck walking toward bike rack barricades and police lines in the Lower West Plaza, where a violent struggle took place between rioters and law enforcement.

The Justice Department said law enforcement officers then pepper-sprayed the rioters, and Mauck could be seen rubbing his eyes in distress before picking up an overturned police bike carrier and pushing it at an officer.

Around 1:40 p.m., Willey and other rioters began moving a large sign on metal-framed wheels toward the police line and barricade to use it as a battering ram, according to the Justice Department.

The Justice Department says that around 2:50 p.m., Willey and Mauck were seen entering the Lower West Terrace Tunnel, where some of the “most violent attacks against law enforcement” took place, and that security footage showed rioters, including Mauck and Willey, advancing toward the police line. all together.

Around 2:55 p.m., Willey took two police shields from another rioter and passed them toward rioters near the police line before handing a large black speaker to other rioters in the Tunnel, the Justice Department said. The Justice Department adds that this speaker was ultimately thrown into the police line by other rioters.

According to the Department of Justice, both Willey and Mauck exited the Tunnel at approximately 3:04 p.m.; where they could be seen in the crowd outside the Tunnel watching other rioters drag two officers into the crowd.

The FBI arrested the two men on August 31, 2023.
