Rapid City woman had her wheelchair-accessible van stolen Monday night

RAPID CITY, SD (KOTA) – A woman was babysitting her child Monday night, unaware of what had happened to her minivan.

“We last saw the van at 9:30 last night… And at 7 this morning we noticed it wasn’t in the parking lot,” said Licensed Practical Nurse Miranda Morris.

Morris first noticed her 2015 burgundy Chrysler minivan missing from the parking lot of her apartment complex while she was loading her son onto a wheelchair-accessible bus.

She immediately called 911 and filed a police report.

“I don’t know who would steal a wheelchair-accessible vehicle from someone,” Morris said.

Morris isn’t sure how someone could gain entry to the car if they believed they had locked it. However, the van was left unattended and unlocked, according to a Rapid City Police official.

Additionally, police say a second key may have been forgotten inside the vehicle.

Morris says vehicle theft is a rare occurrence in his neighborhood. She thinks the incident is unfortunate because the minibus is the only means of transportation for her child, who is dependent on special needs services.

“My son weighs about 65 kilos and it is very difficult to transfer him. I need this vehicle to take my son to out-of-state (and) in-state appointments,” Morris explained.

“It is disgusting that thieves victimized a disabled member of our community, and our detectives are committed to doing everything possible to locate and recover the vehicle,” RCPD said in a statement. “Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the vehicle or responsible for retrieving it should contact police investigations at 605-394-4134.”
