Brooks Landfill closed due to high winds

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – The Brooks C&D Landfill closed at noon Tuesday due to high winds.

“Winds this strong can cause property damage and flying debris and create safety issues for employees and residents visiting the landfill and equipment,” the City of Wichita said.

Storm Team 12 said wind gusts of up to 50-60 mph are expected throughout the day. The benchmark for strong storm winds is 58 mph.

It doesn’t take long for the wind to blow small objects around. A trash can can move at 28 miles per hour. The average person can move through wind gusts of 67 miles per hour.

If you have loose objects outside, secure them, especially outdoor furniture and decorations. Use caution when driving near high-profile vehicles in crosswinds.

The landfill is scheduled to reopen at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 30.
