Hundreds of homes evacuated near Colorado wildfire, official says

More than 700 homes are under evacuation orders due to an uncontrolled fire near the Colorado town of Divide, local law enforcement said Monday.

The blaze, called the Highland Lake Fire, had burned nearly 90 acres by 7 p.m. Monday and was not fully contained, Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell told reporters at a news conference.

A local disaster emergency has been declared. The county said in an update that one structure was destroyed Monday evening.

“You’ll see everyone from early in the morning putting everything they can into this thing,” Mikesell said.

The sheriff’s office was requesting assistance from multiple agencies in the area as they anticipated high winds that could help spread the fire during red flag conditions. Those winds are expected to continue at around 20 mph overnight, then strengthen to around 50 mph on Tuesday, he said.

The county said the evacuation area extends from Cedar Mountain North to Golden Bell, Wayward Wind, Snowhill, Aspen Village, Broken Wheel, Alpine View, Beaver Lake Circle, Beaver Lake Place and He said it covers the Star View Trail.

More homes are expected to be evacuated, Mikesell said.

“We’ll have a more comprehensive assessment tomorrow, but we want to address this fire very quickly and be super aggressive about it,” he said.
