Elm Street Killings’ Best Nightmare

Dan’s death begins with one of those incredible events A Nightmare on Elm Street Hoaxes that make us believe Freddy will kill her in a car crash. However, Dan seemingly manages to escape this scenario only to find a nearby motorcycle he procured to escape. We soon learn that the motorcycle has been taken over by Freddy (never trust anything red or green in these movies), fusing with Dan until he becomes a machine/human/Freddy hybrid and speeding down the highway to his fiery death. It’s one of those images that belongs in a much better film, but that shouldn’t take away from the respect the scene deserves.

3. Glen Goes Into the Blood Mixer – A Nightmare on Elm Street

The most visually detailed kill in the original A Nightmare on Elm StreetGlen’s death helped set the standard for what was to come. You could argue that even the more conceptually elaborate kills that follow can’t top the sheer spectacle of this one. The scene shows Glen (a young Johnny Depp) being sucked into his bed before a gush of blood emerges from his sheeted grave. threesome nightmare reported to have been achieved It quickly became a fire hazard with the help of an upside-down room and several hundred gallons of fake blood.

Despite how over-the-top this murder is, there is a level of restraint applied to this sequence that makes it truly special. The camera barely moves as we watch Glen and his nearby belongings retreat to the bed. The incredible soundtrack and Glen’s fading screams effectively let us know what unspeakable act is being committed before our eyes, and given that the structure is so effective on its own, the payoff is more than we could have hoped for.

2. Phillip Gets Nervous – A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors

In a movie full of death scenes that rank high among this series’ best kills, Phillip’s murder still feels like the biggest showpiece. It begins with a Freddy-like puppet bringing itself to life through stop-motion animation (a truly incredible effect) before Freddy appears to turn Phillip into a puppet. Not by magic, but by turning Phillip’s skin and ligaments into ropes that Freddy uses to guide him through the hospital corridors. His painful journey culminates in a trip to the balcony where Freddy slowly cuts the ropes before Phillip falls to his (merciful, at this point) death.

Few Nightmare deaths can challenge everything this scene does so well. The quality of the effects on display is objectively admirable, but what makes them effective is the way they add to a truly gruesome death without diminishing its impact. More importantly, this scene doesn’t compromise the heart of the show: the fear of being in danger while sleeping. Phillip’s sleepwalking habits are effectively weaponized in this scene, and the fear in the other patients’ eyes when they realize they’re watching him walk to his death would be just as terrifying even if Freddy wasn’t pulling the strings.

1. Tina Sets the Standard – A Nightmare on Elm Street

Some might argue that Tina’s death isn’t detailed enough to be at the top of such a list; I too would disagree, based on the spectacular revolving room set finale, which ranks high among the most impressive effects in the history of this series. But in the end, taking this argument down this path takes us too far from the main point.
