with an effort called Short Pump area transportation improvement projectVDOT plans to add new lanes to Route 288 in Goochland County, install an interchange between Interstate 64 and North Gayton Road in Henrico County, replace the interchange between West Broad Street and I-64 and more.

The agency will organize an event public meeting event this week where residents can ask questions. The meeting will be held Tuesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Wingate by Wyndham hotel on North Gayton Road in Short Pump.

VDOT plans to eliminate the ramp from eastbound Broad Street to westbound Interstate 64 (black line). Currently, cars coming to the highway are forced to merge with cars leaving the highway, and this causes accidents.

I-64 and West Broad

  • VDOT plans to remove the cloverleaf ramp from eastbound Broad Street to westbound I-64. Instead, drivers will turn left on Broad to enter the westbound portion of the highway. Currently, cars are entering westbound I-64 from the small area where others exit, causing crashes, according to Henrico last year’s report. Under the proposed plan, cars would enter from lower down the highway, giving more space to those exiting the highway.
  • Drivers heading west on Broad Street will have two lanes where they can turn right and enter the westbound lanes of I-64.
  • After the highway, drivers continuing west on Broad Street and toward Short Pump will have a slightly wider road. The right turn lane onto Tom Leonard Drive will be converted to a shared right lane and through lane. This will give drivers more time to move from four lanes to three lanes.
  • Travelers heading westbound on I-64 onto eastbound Broad Street will no longer be able to turn left at Dominion Boulevard because it involves crossing three lanes of traffic in a short distance.

VDOT plans to create an interchange at North Gayton Road and Interstate 64 in western Henrico County. The agency plans to build a “diamond of distinction” where cars travel on the left side of the road for short periods of time.

I-64 and North Gayton

  • In an effort to reduce traffic at the intersection between I-64 and West Broad, VDOT plans to add another interchange at North Gayton Road in West Henrico, near the Goochland line. This intersection, where drivers temporarily drive on the left side of the road, will be called a “different diamond.”

Route 288

  • In the southbound lanes of Route 288, VDOT plans to add an extra lane between Broad Street and Tuckahoe Creek Parkway. Accordingly, this should increase speeds and reduce congestion
  • to the report.
  • The agency plans to build an extra lane in the northbound lanes between Tuckahoe Creek and Broad. An extra lane will be added for travelers exiting Route 288 onto eastbound Broad Street. A traffic light will be added for travelers turning left from West Broad into the southbound lanes of the 288.

I-295

  • Currently, drivers from westbound I-64 to I-295 must merge into one lane. VDOT plans to add a second lane to the Nuckols Road intersection.
