Second AAHS student killed in separate accident | News, Sports, Jobs

The Altoona Area School District is reeling after two students were killed in two separate traffic accidents this weekend.

Early Sunday morning, an Altoona County girls soccer player was killed in a crash in Altoona (See related story on Page A1). Later that day, district officials learned of another accident that killed a male student.

District spokeswoman Paula Foreman said it’s been a rough few days.

“The loss of life at such a young age makes this (especially difficult),” he said.

In both cases, the district is providing extra counseling and grief support to staff and students who need it at the high school, according to a memo sent to parents by district Superintendent Brad Hatch.

Hatch’s memo stated that parents with concerns about their children’s reactions to the deaths can call the Counseling Department at 814-946-8277.

Foreman said the district confirmed the second death with the victim’s family after receiving initial reports.

It was reported that this was a single-vehicle crash, adding that he had limited information at this point.

Two passengers were killed and the driver was seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash on Route 30 in East Providence Township around 10:30 p.m. Sunday, according to a state police report.

The Mirror was unable to confirm that this crash was the same one that resulted in the death of the male student.

According to the report in this case, a 1999 Honda Accord driven by Kaleb L. Strong, 19, of Altoona, left the westbound lane, hit an embankment, spun several times and came to rest facing east in the right westbound lane.

State police say two backseat passengers jumped out of the vehicle at the time of the crash. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. The adult victim was identified as Kamren D. Martin, 22, of State College. The other male victim was not identified in the police report and his age was not stated.

A fourth Tyrone resident, Tyler W. Young, 27, was suspected of suffering minor injuries, according to the report.

Strong was transported to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center for treatment of suspected serious injuries, while Young was transported to Fulton County Medical Center.
