SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – City of San Diego leaders announced Monday that nearly 500 shelter options will be available by the end of 2024, replacing the 614 that will go offline.

Golden Hall and Father Joe Villages’ Paul Mirabile Center will close by the end of the year.

By December, city leaders say 160 beds will be available for seniors and veterans at San Diego’s Veterans Village; 56 beds will be available to house people with substance abuse disorders; The new San Diego Mission Shelter in National City will have 37 more beds available; and 235 new tents will be added to Safe Sleep areas.

The City of San Diego is also working to convert a former motel into a 135-bed shelter. No date has been given for when it will open.

Additionally, the city created a homeless referral program to connect homeless individuals with housing solutions to free up shelter space more quickly.

“We had no choice. Since I became mayor, we have focused on expanding our shelter capacity. While some of our beds went offline, we worked collaboratively with multiple partners to make sure no one was in our shelter. The system is back on the streets today,” said Mayor Todd Gloria.

The funding will come from the city’s $4.2 million budget to address homelessness and funds to be used for the Golden Hall and Mirabile Center.

Gloria said the job isn’t over when all those sites come online because she’s still negotiating with the owner of the controversial 1,000-bed housing site on Kettner and Vine.
